AML Investigator (100% Remote, European Timezone)

About the role

Bitfinex is looking for an AML Investigator to work fully remotely, within European timezones. The role investigates referrals of unusual activity sent to the Compliance Team so that Suspicious Activity Reports (SARs) can be submitted within regulatory timelines or the case can be closed as not suspicious. The investigator reports to the Head of Investigation Team, with a dotted line to the Chief Compliance Officer, and works closely with Compliance, Customer Support and peer investigators on fraud, money laundering, terrorist financing and sanctions risks.

Key responsibilities

• Investigate referrals of unusual activity and determine risk exposure to Bitfinex, mitigating it through SAR filing, account-closure recommendations and fund freezing where applicable.
• Support Customer Help Desk and Legal Team requests for investigative assistance.
• Communicate with customers, agents and internal attorneys as needed.
• Build relationships with peers in the industry to share best practices and investigative techniques.
• Keep improving knowledge of blockchain technology, virtual currencies, suspicious activity patterns and criminal modus operandi.

Required profile

• University education (preferred).
• Demonstrated AML experience, including customer and enhanced due diligence (CDD/EDD), AML/CTF/Sanctions investigations and SAR/STR reporting.
• Experience in an investigative function.
• Ability to work independently with minimal supervision, flexible on working arrangements and hours, and confident in making delegated decisions.
• CAMS/CBP designation (preferred).

Required skills

• Use of blockchain analytics tools such as Chainalysis, TRM and Elliptic.
• Excellent written and verbal communication and critical thinking.
• Attention to detail and organisational understanding.
