Senior Backend Engineer

About the role

LearnWise AI is an AI‑first startup building knowledge‑driven tools for universities and colleges. As a Senior Backend Engineer you will work closely with the CTO, Head of Product, VP of Engineering and the engineering team to create reliable, scalable backend systems that power AI‑enhanced products used at scale.

Key responsibilities

• Design, develop, and maintain backend services and APIs that support core product experiences.
• Implement integrations with external systems, handling data synchronization, webhooks, error handling, retries and monitoring.
• Build secure, enterprise‑ready components covering authentication, authorization, permissions and service‑to‑service communication.
• Collaborate with Product, Design, AI and Engineering to translate customer needs into technical solutions, clarify scope, identify risks and ship iteratively.
• Debug production issues across services, infrastructure, integrations and third‑party systems, and improve system reliability, observability and security.

Required profile

• Strong senior‑level backend engineer with ownership mindset.
• Proven experience building and operating production backend services.
• Hands‑on experience with system integrations, third‑party APIs, data flows and operational monitoring.
• Deep understanding of authentication and authorization patterns such as SSO, OAuth/OIDC, JWTs and role‑based access control.
• Ability to design APIs and microservices used by customers or internal engineering teams.
• Excellent written and spoken English and ability to work independently in a remote, async‑first environment.
