Senior R&D Engineer

About the role

Proton is seeking a Senior R&D Engineer to lead performance engineering for Proton VPN. You will own the end‑to‑end performance framework, define metrics that reflect real‑world user experience, and ensure the service remains fast, stable, and private across all platforms and networks.

Key responsibilities

• Design, implement and maintain Proton VPN’s performance measurement framework.
• Define and track key performance indicators such as time‑to‑connect, throughput, latency, and reliability.
• Analyze performance data from clients, servers and global infrastructure to identify bottlenecks.
• Drive optimisation initiatives across code, network protocols and infrastructure.
• Collaborate with product, engineering and security teams to integrate performance goals into feature development.
• Provide regular performance reports and recommendations to senior leadership.

Required profile

• Proven experience in performance engineering for large‑scale networked services.
• Strong analytical mindset with ability to translate data into actionable improvements.
• Experience working in a fast‑moving, high‑impact environment.
• Excellent communication skills to convey complex technical concepts to diverse audiences.
